Violence and the Sacred
A Lenten Series by David Cabush
Wednesdays, 8:00-9:00 PM, March 14, 21, & 28
The Meriney Room at Saint John’s Esiscopal Church in Ramsey
The Reverend Dr. David Cabush, interim priest at Saint John’s Memorial Episcopal Church, located on the corner of Main Street and Franklin Turnpike in Ramsey, will present a special Lenten series entitled Violence and the Sacred from 8pm – 9pm on Wednesday nights in March, commencing on the 14th. The paradox with which we live is that at one time religion was once accepted as the force that united people and held a society together (the Latin for religion is ‘to bind’). But in today’s world, religion is often treated with anxiety and suspicion because it is seen as a source of division, conflict, and violence in society. Many faithful Christians are also wondering about some of the sacred rites and symbols of their faith, especially in regard to the Eucharist. What is all this talk about sacrifice? Where is “the love” in rituals that are seemingly centered on a lynching? Why do we “remember His death” Sunday after Sunday? Is there any real difference between our Christian rites and other religious practices that include sacrifice? To investigate and respond to these concerns, The Reverend Dr. Cabush will draw upon the work of some of today's best scholars and theologians, including the likes of René Girard, Michael Kirwan, James Alison and N.T. Wright. For more information on this event and other church activities, please contact the church office at 201-327-0703.

For more information on Saint John’s Youth Group and worship services, call the church office at 201-327-0703.
Saint John’s Hides Alleluia During Lent
Children at Saint John’s Episcopal Church, located at the corner of Franklin Turnpike and East Main Street in Ramsey, proudly display their Alleluia Banners on the Sunday before Lent. The banners are hidden away during Lent because the word alleluia is removed from the liturgy during the Lenten season. Lent is a time of reflection and repentance, and alleluia is a joyful word denoting celebration. The Alleluia Banners will “magically” reappear on Easter Sunday when Christians rejoice and celebrate Jesus Christ’s resurrection.
