This Week at St. John's

Welcome

Whoever you are and wherever you are on your journey of faith, you are welcome.  Our central message is that the unconditional love of God is extended to you right now through Jesus Christ.  Here, in the Church, God says: “This is my family, and you belong.  I will bless you.”

If this is your first time with us, please take a moment and fill out a Welcome card found in the pew rack. You can place the card in the offering plate or at designated locations at the church entrances.  Do join us in the Parish Hall for coffee and fellowship.

Announcements

Daylight Savings is next Sunday, March 14th.  Remember to set your clocks ahead one hour.

Prayer List for Lent. During Lent we will be reading aloud the names in the first section titled “Those Who Are Ill And In Need” each week in the back of this program. Please remember to pray for all our sick, suffering and in need printed here and in your own life on a daily basis.

Today's Postlude. Throughout Lent the postlude to our worship will be quiet and based on a familiar hymn.  This mornings postlude is based hymn number 693.  Read the text of this hymn as you listen to the music and take these thoughts with you as you leave the nave this morning.

Sign up! Those Crazy Episcopalians, Sundays, March 7, 14, 21 from 9AM to 9:45AM.  Maybe you are new to the church or maybe you have been here for a while, maybe you wish to formally join the Episcopal church or are just curious—then this is for you.    We will explore our roots, our worship, our approach to scripture and how we are organized. This will serve as preparation for those adults wishing to be confirmed or received into the Church on April 18, 2010 at our district confirmation. You can sign up in the Parish Hall on the sign-up sheet or you can call the Parish Office at (201) 327-0703.

Baptism. The next two baptismal dates are Easter, April 3 at 8pm and April 4 at 11am as well as Pentecost, May  23 at 10 am. The Great Vigil of Easter (April 3 at 8 pm) is a particularly apt time for adult baptism. Anyone interested in exploring Baptism, should contact Fr. Julian by Wednesday, March 10th to arrange for preparation.

Apostles' House, a mission providing food and shelter in Newark, is in urgent need of new or gently used twin-sized sheets and pillowcases. Sheets will be collected for the next two weeks, to be blessed and delivered on March 21st.  So check your linen closets and use up those old Bed Bath & Beyond coupons for a very worthy cause.  (Clean sheets only, please.)

Feeding The Mind:  Spring 2010 Series of Tutor Training Classes. ESL Tutor Training sessions will be held at St. John’s on Saturday mornings from 9 am until 12 noon, beginning April 10.  It is important to attend all sessions which are scheduled for April 10, 17, 24 and May 8.   Pre-registration is required - fee is $15 toward materials.  Following the training, the volunteers will be matched with an adult in need of learning spoken English. Teaching is 1-1 and free to the learner. Interested persons may call Emmy Bledsoe as soon as possible at 201-825-0474 for details.

Save The Date:   St. John’s will host its annual Spring Boutique and Luncheon on Saturday, March 27th from 9 AM -  3 PM. Come, bring a friend and enjoy.

A BIG THANK YOU to all of you who have volunteered to prepare dinners for Gina and her family.  All of March is already filled up except for the last day, Wednesday., March 31.  We will then move onto April. If you have not been getting my emails, please send your email address to me:  kathyfede@msn.com.  For those who are interested but are not on email, please call me at  201-327-8591. Thanks again for your help!  Kathy Fede.

Forgiveness—A Lenten Journey

Living out the joy of God’s forgiveness, manifest in Jesus Christ, “is all that Christian ethics has ever been or will be.” Our contributors offer thoughtful reflection to enrich our understanding of God’s forgiveness and to stir our practice of living out its joy.

Forgiveness is God’s Purpose                                                                 February 24 @ 8pm

Forgiveness is central to God’s activity in the human realm. But what is forgiveness? And who is the God who offers this to us and seeks reconciliation with a stubborn and sinful humanity?

Why Should We Forgive?                                                                                 March 3@ 8pm

We are motivated, as Christians, to forgive others for reasons that go beyond self-interest. One surprising result: we are never in the position of privilege, wronged one or wrongdoer, where we are excused from the responsibility of working for reconciliation.

The Politics of Salvation                                                                                 March 10 @ 8 pm

God’s repentance-enabling forgiveness is not for the faint of heart. It is a call to radical and costly life changes.

Becoming Forgiving People                                                                         March 17 @ 8pm

Forgiving people come to ‘see’ offenders with what the Apostle Paul calls “eyes of the heart”. How does God’s repentance-enabling forgiveness overcome our resistance to receiving and granting forgiveness?

See How They Love One Another                                                           March 24 @ 8 pm

The church, for all its faults and foibles, can teach us to be forgiving people.  Congregational worship may provide us with practice and conditioning for the hard work of forgiveness and reconciliation.
